The General Rule: Arrive with Day-Old Hair

Arrive with hair washed twenty-four to forty-eight hours before your appointment. Natural oils (sebum) form a thin protective barrier on the scalp that buffers against irritation from colour chemicals, particularly the ammonia and higher-volume developers used in permanent colour and lightening services. Arriving with freshly washed, scrubbed-clean hair strips this barrier away, leaving your scalp more vulnerable. This is especially important for lightening services and for clients with sensitive scalps.

When Clean Hair Is Preferred

Gloss treatments and toners work best on hair free of heavy product buildup. Some professional colour lines are specifically formulated for application on clean hair. If you have used significant amounts of dry shampoo, texturising spray, or heavy styling products, wash the evening before — not immediately before — your appointment. If you accidentally washed your hair the morning of your appointment, do not worry — tell your colourist. They will take appropriate precautions. The service can still proceed.

What Else to Avoid Before Colouring

Do not scratch or aggressively brush your scalp — broken skin is vulnerable to irritation. Do not apply heavy oils or serums to the roots within twenty-four hours of colouring. Do not swim in chlorinated pools — chlorine can react unpredictably with colour chemicals.
