If the lightening process stops before warm pigments are fully broken down, brassiness results. Brassiness can also develop after successful lightening when toner fades and the underlying warmth becomes visible again. Environmental factors — hard water, UV exposure, pollution — accelerate this process.
A professional toner deposits cool pigments directly onto the hair. Violet neutralises yellow tones. Blue neutralises orange tones. A skilled colourist custom-formulates the toner to target your specific brassiness precisely. A salon toner can transform brassy blonde to cool, clean blonde in a single forty-five-minute appointment — significantly more effective than purple shampoo alone. Purple shampoo is essential for maintenance (once or twice weekly) but cannot match the corrective power of professional toning. If your brassiness is orange rather than yellow, purple shampoo will not help — you need blue shampoo followed by professional assessment.
