Grey hair is not grey in pigment — it is transparent. When melanocytes stop producing melanin, the hair shaft grows without colour. The grey we see is an optical effect of light passing through unpigmented strands. Grey hair also differs in texture: it tends to be coarser, wirier, and more resistant to chemical processing because the cuticle is tighter and harder to penetrate.
For fifty percent-plus grey, permanent colour is the gold standard. It uses twenty or thirty volume developer to open the cuticle fully, allowing colour molecules to penetrate deeply and coat resistant strands completely. This provides the most reliable, opaque coverage. The trade-off: visible regrowth requiring root touch-ups every four to six weeks.
Demi-permanent provides approximately fifty to seventy percent coverage — enough to soften and blend grey without fully concealing it. Ideal for thirty percent grey or less. No visible regrowth line because colour fades gradually from the entire strand. Also excellent for women transitioning toward wearing their grey naturally.
Strategic highlights reduce contrast between grey and pigmented strands. When grey is surrounded by lighter pieces, it reads as part of the colour dimension rather than as an unwanted separate element. Best for up to forty percent grey. The grey blending trend — using highlights, lowlights, and toner — creates an intentional salt-and-pepper look.
