At Dalton Street Salon on John Dalton Street in Manchester city centre, we serve women across Greater Manchester with expert colour, precision cutting, and luxury treatments. Our clients include professionals from Spinningfields, creatives from the Northern Quarter, and women who travel into the city because they value genuine expertise.
Your skin undertone is different from your skin colour. Skin colour — fair, medium, olive, dark — changes with sun exposure and seasons. Undertone — warm, cool, or neutral — remains constant throughout your life. The vein test: look at the veins on your inner wrist in natural daylight. Greenish veins indicate warm undertones. Blue or purple veins indicate cool undertones. If you cannot tell, you may have neutral undertones. The jewellery test: if gold jewellery makes your skin look healthy and luminous, you are warm. If silver has the same effect, you are cool. If both suit you equally, you are neutral. The white fabric test: hold pure white fabric next to your face in natural light. If your skin looks yellowish or golden, you are warm. If it looks pinkish or rosy, you are cool.
Warm undertones glow with hair colours containing gold, honey, caramel, copper, warm chocolate, and auburn tones. In blonde: golden blonde, honey blonde, caramel blonde, strawberry blonde. In brunette: warm chocolate, chestnut, mahogany, golden brown. In red: copper, ginger, warm auburn. Avoid ash, platinum, and icy tones which can make warm skin appear sallow or grey.
Cool undertones are flattered by hair colours containing ash, violet, or blue bases. In blonde: platinum, ash, pearl, champagne. In brunette: cool espresso, mushroom brown, ash brown. In red: burgundy, merlot, cool auburn. Avoid golden, honey, and copper tones which can emphasise redness in the skin.
Neutral undertones can wear both warm and cool colours. Beige blonde, true brown, and soft dimensional colours are most reliably flattering. Very extreme warm or cool tones may feel slightly disconnected from neutral skin.
While at-home undertone analysis is useful, professional assessment under controlled lighting provides the most accurate results. At Dalton Street Salon, your colourist will confirm your undertone and recommend specific shades that harmonise with your complexion.
Our colourists are trained in the chemistry of hair colour — understanding how developers interact with different hair types and how underlying pigments affect final results. Our stylists bring equivalent expertise to cutting, creating shapes that work with your natural texture and continue looking beautiful as they grow out. Every service begins with a thorough consultation. We examine your hair under professional lighting, discuss your goals and lifestyle, and provide honest recommendations.
We use professional-grade products exclusively. Olaplex is included as standard in every lightening service.
